Mewsette Cartwright is the LifePlex Dance Academy Director. She holds a DVIDA Professional Certification in Ballroom Instruction. Mewsette is also AFAA Certified in both group exercise and personal training. Mewsette believes not everyone is born to dance but everyone is born to learn.

Learn to Dance for Proms, Galas, & All Social Events

Want to be able to dance at any social event like weddings, night clubs or anywhere that music is playing? Here is your chance to learn and have fun with different styles of dance steps. No partner is necessary to participate in classes and rotating partners is not required. Group sessions are 12 week semesters. Intermediate classes meet on Tuesday nights and Beginner classes meet on Friday nights for one hour, perfect for date night or just a fun hobby for yourself. LDA instructors are professionally trained to provide quality instruction at reasonable rates. Private lessons are also available throughout the week for a couple or individual instruction.

LifePlex Dance Academy Class Descriptions

Beginner Ballet: (Pre School through Adult Classes)
This beginner level course is designed to give the understanding and awareness of fundamental movement of dance technique through proper corrective energy application, timing and presentation. The alignment of the body through a series of floor, chair and barre exercises. Ballet is the very foundation for any dance genre a student will benefit for their dance career or hobby. Ballet teaches balance, discipline and the education of vocabulary that will blend with any dance genre.

Beginner Intermediate Ballroom
This class will prepare you to be able to dance anywhere at any event such as; cruise ships, gala’s, prom, weddings, night clubs or any social atmosphere. If there is a dance floor and music you will be ready to burn up the dance floor. No previous dance experience necessary. Students will learn Cha Cha, East Coast Swing, Fox Trot, Waltz, Rumba and Tango.

Beginner Latin Class
Learn sizzling latin moves with Mr. Patrick Pendexter. Students will learn Bachata, Salsa, Cumbia and Bolero dance patterns that students will be able to dance anywhere latin rhythm music is played.

Hip Hop & Tap Beginner
Intermediate: Emphasizing the development of coordination, strength, stamina and rhythm necessary to meet the demands of high intensity performance skills in popular street dancing forms.
Tap emphasizes basic traditional tap steps, combinations, rhythms and introduces the rhythm-based work of Jazz-tap as performed in concert.

Beginner Square Dance
A historic modern western folk dance that all can enjoy at any age. Dance patterns are called out by a Caller who will teach patterns then everyone dances the taught patterns (Calls). Square dance is America’s best kept secret that the entire family can enjoy together.

Beginner Belly Danc
This Womans Only Dance is an introduction to the 4,000 year old folk middle eastern dance for women by women. This is a beautiful performing art form empowering the everyday woman to feel feminine, confident, and appreciate movement through graceful isolation techniques.

NEW!! Cheer & Tumbling
Students will learn basic cheer fundamentals, cheer etiquette and teamwork, stretching and flexibility. Cheers, chants, floor cheers, basic building technique and jumps and dance technique. This class is designed for students aspiring to become or already a cheerleader. Tumbling will be taught during this class. If you need basic tumble instruction please see an LDA Rep.

Introduction to Hip Hop & Tap
Students will learn the basic fundamentals and terminology in Hip Hop and Tap. They will learn class structure and discipline as well as stretch and flexibility. This class runs 90 minutes with a 5 minute break for water and a small healty snack if they wish. These classes are designed to give the student a basic knowledge of Hip Hop and Tap. Students will perform two routines in the recital, a Tap and a Hip Hop and Tap routine.

Dance Team
Competitive dance is a rapidly growing part of the dance community. There are all ages and genres of dance that are a part of the competitive dance industry such as ballet, tap, jazz, hjp hop and many other forms of dance. Being a part of a competitive /performance dance team not only gives students self confidence and self worth but teaches them to work within a group/team and the fundamentals of performing.

Jr Ballroom
This structured dance class prepares children and young adults to be able to socialize with others in a sophisticated and educated social manner. Ballroom dancing is a fun interaction with others that is reliant on non verbal communication skills and signals. Dancing with a partner teaches strategy, patience, teamwork, etiquette and the respect for others.

New!! Tumbling (Acrobat)
Students will learn flexibility, strength training, balance, coordination as well as class structure. Students will also focus on an acrobatic foundation as moving into a dance class or athletic sport.

Toddler Ballet
Students will learn ballet class structure and discipline as well as fexibility and basic ballet terminology. Students will learn basic motor skills and body movement. Students will learn to distinguish between left, right, up and down and what that means in relation to moving their bodies. Toddler ballet is designed to get them ready to move into a pre-school ballet class with Miss Marcia when they are ready.

Adult Hoop Dance Beginner Intermediate
Fine tune your coordination, improve the flexibility of your spine, and raise your energy level. Hoops are available for your use, or you may purchase your own personal weighted hoop through the instructor.


Plymouth "Mixer" Dances

Plymouth Mixer Dances are held in the Gym at Fitness Forum Sports & Wellness at LifePlex. Come and join the fun starting at 7:00pm for a dance lesson with one of our talented instructors followed by the dance party from
8:00-11:00pm. Our D.J.'s play a variety of upbeat music for all ages.

Costs:
Adults- $10.00 (bring a dish to share and take $2.00 off)
Dance Teacher - Free
College, High School, Jr. High Students - $8.00
Children 12 & under - $5.00

Attire: Semi Casual to dressy

Snacks: Light snacks are provided
